A PLACE WE CALL HOME
By Henry L. Yu, M.D.
Class 1978
One particular medical school in Cebu will be celebrating its golden anniversary or 50 years from the time of its birth in 1957. It is the very school that made me and all the rest of its graduates scattered all over the world what we are today. Yes, CIM as in Cebu Institute of Medicine.
All roads lead to CIM come December 2-8 as we come home to a place where we've been to once upon a time as struggling medical students all poised to become the doctors that we've always wanted to be. We come home to CIM and gather around for this one significant moment. This time more wise mentally and more mature physically. But in the eyes of our fellow classmates and friends we will always be the same guys and gals of decades past. Nothing has changed except that we have become better persons - as children of God, as doctors, as parents, or as senior citizens.
On this very important and significant milestone, we pay tribute to our beloved teachers for making us what we are today. This homecoming is geared towards fellowship and camaraderie among us all classmates, friends, teachers and the significant others, reunited as one big group, as we bring back our yesteryears - the five (5) decades of our joy, our fun, and our seasons in the sun, to sing and dance and laugh and chat... but most of all, to thank God Almighty for giving us the privilege of reaching this far. Oh, fifty years is 50 years, any which way we look at it.
Thank you, Lord, for the Gift of Life and Friendship. It’s nice to be back to a place where we have been. To a place where we belong. To a place we call HOME.
PHYSICIAN WITH A HEART
With our CIM Golden Jubilee just an arm's stretch away, I can't help but feel my adrenaline soaring to higher level as I get more excited with each passing day about the influx of fellow alumni from all over the world, coming home to join us in this once-in-a-lifeime celebration of a very significant milestone in the history of a school that made us what we are today: Physician with a Heart. The mere thought of being reunited with classmates, schoolmates, teachers and friends, gives me that certain kind of high like no other. Meeting them again after all these years of being separated from each other brought about by time, space and distance would indeed be such a rejuvenating experience.
As I sit on my office chair today, faces and places keep flashing back as I recall yesteryears' glory, misery, triumph and victory. Indeed, each journey to the past brings forth memories of the things we did when we were struggling medical students, those hard climbs and the adventures of youth and all those that contributed in the making of a Physician with a Heart, of which all of us CIM alumni were nurtured to become. So let us all live up to that - in words and in deeds.

CIM WELCOMES HOME ALUMNI
Fifty years after its founding in 1957, the Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM), one of the four medical schools in Cebu, has maintained its high standards of excellence in medical education as envisioned by its founders. It is classified as Level IV (the highest category based on the findings done by the Commission on Medical Education) and is recognized as one of the three Centers of Excellence for Medicine in the country. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted CIM an autonomy status.
Come December 2-8, all roads lead to CIM as it celebrates its 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee) with the theme "50 Years of Excellence in Medical Education". Alumni from both the international and domestic front will be coming home to join the rest in this once-in-a-lifetime grand event geared towards fellowship and camaraderie among former classmates, friends, teachers and fellow alumni.
The weeklong celebration will start with a Thanksgiving Mass on December 2, followed by a motorcade around key streets of the city. Other activities include: medical-surgical missions, medical world congress, fellowship night, coronation of "Golden Jubilee Queen", the Dr. Jacinto Velez Sr. Memorial Lecture, the unveiling of the CIM Golden Book of Memories, individual class reunions, Gala Night, raffle of two cars, among others. For inquiries, email the secretariat at: cimalumni@gmail.com or call (032)-253-7413.

To all CIM alumni:
The CIM Golden Anniversary celebration is barely three months away. This
will be on December 2-8. Let me remind you that if there's one right time
to come home to Cebu it would be this December in time for this
once-in-a-lifetime grand event. Yup, it's the best time as you will be
shooting many birds with one bullet, meaning your coming over to Cebu this
December will not only give you the rare chance to be with your classmates
but likewise with other CIM alumni, former teachers, and the significant
others. It would be such a great feeling to renew friendship, to meet again
those "Crush ng Bayan" of our time, to say hello again to yesteryears, to
reminisce the joys, the fun, and those seasons in the sun, the glory,
triumph and victory of a bygone era, a perfect time like no other.
There are a lot of CIM alumni coming home for this big event. We are
expecting a thousand and more. So come and join us as we celebrate a
milestone in the history of CIM - the school that gave us our diploma and
an M.D. after our names, the school that made us what we are today. So be
counted. Be part of history. It's not everyday that we're celebrating a
Golden Anniversary. See you.

To all fellow CIM alumni:
Yo! It warms our hearts to know that a lot of CIM alumni are coming home to join us in this bigger-than-life celebration of our school's Golden Anniversary come December 2-8. Although we're a little sad to know that some are arriving on December 5 pa daw for one reason or the other. Just some hearty words from us: Please try to reschedule your trip in such a way that you'll be here na on December 1 so you can attend all the activities from the very beginning which is December 2 (Thanksgiving Mass and Motorcade, etc.) till December 8. In short, puslan man nga moanhi mo, why not make it on or before December 2? Whichever, we look forward to seeing you all here in the beautiful city of Cebu where CIM, the second best medical school, is.
I assure you, di gyud mo magmahay for deciding to attend this once-in-a-lifetime event. We, in the organizing committee, are putting our best feet forward to make this event truly memorable and unforgettable even long after the event shall be over. Please tell or convince your classmates and other CIM alumni to come and join us gyud. The more the merrier. Yes, "'Tis the season to be jolly. Falalalalalala. Don we now our gay apparel. Falalalalalalala...." But most of all, "this is but once in a lifetime, this is the thrill divine. Again this couldn't happen again, this is but once in a lifetime..." Remember these songs? They're just some that we're gonna sing again when we meet come December. Afterall, what is a reunion? It is a going-back to where we were once before - to sing our songs, to look back, to appreciate and put value
to what we have gone through, to what we have done, to what we have achieved and be happy about it, just because... We all do love memories, don't we? As the Hallmark greeting cards jingle ad of the '70s would put it, "For no one throws away memories..."

CIM Golden Jubilee 2007

4 July 2007
Dear Fellow CIM Alumni,
Greetings from the Cebu Institute of Medicine!!
It's been fifty long years since CIM was born and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its founding, we deemed it proper to produce a book to depict its development as one of the best medical schools in the country; granted the Center of Excellence status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), a testimonial to the quality of the education and training which the school has always hoped to achieve in producing "Physicians with a Heart". In this book, we will highlight the evolution of the school and walk the reader through the changes in the curriculum until the present Problem-Based Learning Methodology. We also intend to recognize and honor our esteemed faculty for their dedication and guidance of everyone who passed through its portals.
We will feature the CIM student and the student life which all of us experienced at one time or another. So many have walked through the corridors of our institution and are now all over the Philippines and the world. A great number topped the Philippine Medical Board Examinations. This achievement has yearly been duly recognized by the Board of Medical Education. Many more have brought glory to CIM and to our country as leaders in their respective fields of expertise - clinical practice, research, the academe, and government service.
We are pre-selling this book and the proceeds of the sales of this coffee table book will be added to the alumni fund for the different projects which it has envisioned for the coming years mainly, scholarships for deserving students and assistance for indigent patients in the CIM Service wards. The book will cost Php 1,500 for reservations done now until September 30, 2007. It will cost Php 2,000 thereafter.
Come December 3-8, 2007 all roads lead to CIM as we come home and gather for this significant moment. On the occasion of CIM's Golden Anniversary, we invite you to join us in this once-in-a-lifetime event geared towards service, fellowship and camaraderie.
Very truly yours,
THELMA O.LA ROSA-FERNANDEZ, M.D.

To all fellow CIM alumni:
This year indeed marks a significant milestone in the history of CIM. Let
us be one in this once-in-a-lifetime event of CIM - the school which has
made us what we are today.
Let us support and help Tatay Tom, Nanay Thel, Tito Eng, Tita Noreen, and
all the rest involved in this magnanimous task in making a legend out of a
name.
For once in our life, let us leave behind good footprints of today as our
legacy for those who will be left behind even if we shall no longer be
around someday. Let us all be part of CIM's 50th anniversary celebration.
Let us make history.
Again, we don't claim to be the best. We're simply perfect. Hehehe.
Mabuhay ang CIM!

The grand launching of the CIM Golden Anniversary last Friday (June 29) at
Casino Espanol was every inch a success. It was the first of its kind. It
was a gathering like no other. Truly an affair to remember. We invited the
media people and gave them each a press kit. We distributed "A List of
Board Placers Through the Years". We gave each a souvenir umbrella with the
"CIM at 50" logo. We had a lighting ceremony of the 50 candles by assigned
CIM alumni from different batches. We have the slicing of the ceremonial
cake by Dr. Jacinto Velez, Jr. (CIM President), Dr. Josefina Poblete (CIM
Dean), Dr. Tomas Fernandez (Overall chair of the CIM Golden Jubilee), and
Dr. Pek Eng Lim (President of CIM Alumni Association). Everybody was so
jubilant and ecstatic. It was such a great celebration of bigger things to
come. Afterall, that was just the launching. More to come this December.
Yo! We're all very excited to see you all around by December for the grand
event. Can you imagine all of us CIM alumni in our school uniform again
during the Dr. Jacinto Velez Sr. Memorial Lecture (December 6)? Yup, as
written in the schedule of activities, we will be in our CIM uniform.
Hehehe. We'll sure have lots of fun. Yup, as CIMers, we don't claim to be
the best. We're simply perfect!
Cheers,
Henry
